True Laundry detergent is 4x concentrated and allows consumers to use less laundry detergent, thus saving them money. A local Rochester group believes the product could also save the Black community’s economic awareness.
“As consumers, we don’t do enough to take our money and spend with each other and reinvest in ourselves,” Hanif Abdul-Wahid said.
Abdul-Wahid is the founding member of The Clean Group — a collection of private citizens in Rochester striving to build community economics through consumer purchasing, collective buying, and social consciousness.
When the group searched for a product they could introduce to Rochester, Abdul-Wahid said they focused on something every household needs.
“We didn’t want a product that was temporary,” Abdul-Wahid said.
According to Polaris Market Research, the global laundry detergent market is expected to reach USD 223.8 billion by 2028.
The stat prompted Abdul-Wahid and his partners to travel to Atlanta, Georgia, to spark a deal with the Black-owned laundry detergent to be their distributor in Rochester.
“We wanted to get in on the ground floor and introduce it to our community,” Abdul-Wahid said. “We have to wash our clothes each and every day.”
With eyes on using the distribution of the product as a model for Black entrepreneurship — The Clean Group adopted Black history month to form a partnership with the Black-owned Nathaniel Square Convenience Store.

Since February, “The Square” has featured True Laundry Detergent prominently. Abdul-Wahid spoke to the store’s owner, Ashley Boler, combining their businesses to make a better effort to reach the Black community with their goods and services.
“We have to be patient, but business is starting to pick up, and hopefully, we can get the product in other businesses,” Abdul-Wahid said.
The Clean Group also has an effort to sell True through non-traditional avenues, including beauty parlors, barbershops, and churches. Collaboration is key to the group’s overall mission to encourage others to find a product they believe in and taking the necessary steps to distribute it.
“We need to go out of our way and our comfort zone,” Abdul-Wahid said. “A lot of times, we are conditioned to what is convenient to us, but it takes effort to produce an economy that is for us and by us.”
A 2020 University of Nevada-Las Vegas study on Black entrepreneurship revealed that the median net worth for Black business owners is 12 times higher than Black non-business owners.
According to Abdul-Wahid, the next step for The Clean Group is taking True and spreading it all over the northeastern part of this country.
“We hope that we can become the folks that our ancestors dreamed and prayed for.”
