MVB Financial (NASDAQ:MVBF) Is Increasing Its Dividend To US$0.12

May 23, 2021 by Staff Reporter

The board of MVB Financial Corp. (NASDAQ:MVBF) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 15th of June to US$0.12. This takes the annual payment to 1.0% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that MVB Financial’s stock price has increased by 33% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

MVB Financial’s Earnings Easily Cover the Distributions

If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. Before making this announcement, MVB Financial was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to fall by 33.5%. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, we estimate the payout ratio could be 20%, which is comfortable for the company to continue in the future.

MVB Financial Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company’s distributions have been remarkably stable. The dividend has gone from US$0.045 in 2011 to the most recent annual payment of US$0.48. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 27% over that duration. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

The company’s investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. We are encouraged to see that MVB Financial has grown earnings per share at 38% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.

MVB Financial Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. The company is generating plenty of cash, and the earnings also quite easily cover the distributions. If earnings do fall over the next 12 months, the dividend could be buffeted a little bit, but we don’t think it should cause too much of a problem in the long term. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
